How To Avoid Plastics While Shopping And Eating

Microplastics have become a major concern for both human and environmental health, with these tiny pieces of plastic infiltrating our water sources and even the air we breathe. To combat this issue, it’s important for consumers to find affordable and accessible ways to reduce their plastic consumption.

According to Forbes contributor Dr. Christopher Thompson, microplastics act as endocrine disruptors, mimicking hormones like estrogen and cortisol, which can lead to various health issues such as weight gain, metabolic problems, and fertility issues. Additionally, recent research suggests that microplastics may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The excessive production and disposal of plastic have far-reaching effects on the planet, with 400 million tonnes of plastic waste being generated annually, polluting water supplies. To combat this issue at home, Dr. Jesse Pines suggests avoiding heating plastic containers, frequent vacuuming and wet mopping to reduce inhalation of microplastic particles, and ensuring thorough cleaning of food, especially seafood like shrimp.

Switching to reusable metal or glass bottles instead of plastic water bottles, using powder or liquid soap for washing dishes instead of plastic pods, and utilizing products like Cora Ball or GUPPYFRIEND for laundry can also help reduce plastic consumption. Additionally, with the phasing out of single-use plastic bags in many states, opting for reusable cloth bags when grocery shopping can make a significant impact.

By implementing these simple and affordable tips, consumers can reduce their plastic consumption and contribute to a healthier lifestyle for themselves and the environment. It’s important to be mindful of the impact of plastic on our health and the planet, and take proactive steps to reduce our reliance on this harmful material.
