For many years, glasses were regarded as a necessity rather than a fashion choice. You would typically select a pair in a brightly lit store, accept whatever the salesperson suggested, and hope that it went unnoticed. Contact lenses were seen as the more glamorous alternative, while frames were considered a compromise.

Those days are gone. Now, a stroll through any street-style gallery from Lagos to London reveals that eyewear can be as impactful as a standout pair of earrings or a bold lipstick. They define the look, enhance facial features, and convey a message about the wearer before she even speaks. From oversized square frames paired with a sleek bun to slim gold wireframes on a bare face, and tortoiseshell cat-eye glasses with hoops and a trench coat, eyewear has quietly emerged as one of the most expressive fashion accessories. Unlike most accessories, they are worn on the most visible part of your body daily.

This is why they deserve more consideration than they often receive. Here’s a guide to selecting frames with the same care as any beloved accessory.

Start With Proportion, Not Rules

You’ve likely come across face-shape charts suggesting that round faces require angular frames, while square faces need curves. While these guidelines aren’t incorrect, they’re merely a starting point rather than a definitive answer. Rigidly adhering to them can result in frames that are technically appropriate but utterly forgettable.

Proportion is a more useful consideration. Two key factors should be prioritized: the frame should roughly match the width of the widest part of your face, and the top edge of the frame should align near—not exactly on—your brow line. With these factors in place, nearly any frame shape can work. For instance, a round face can support round frames if they are sufficiently large, and a strong jaw can shine in a square frame if the width is well-balanced.

The charts often overlook that contrast is a stylistic choice, not an error. Softening a pronounced feature is one method, but echoing it can often yield a more striking result. Make your choice with intent.

Color Is Where the Real Magic Happens

The aspect most often overlooked, yet transformative, is color.

Because frames rest directly against your skin throughout the day, the color of the frames can be as significant as their shape. While black is often chosen for its perceived safety, it can appear overly heavy in thick acetate frames depending on your skin tone and frame proportions.

Warm-toned skin can be enhanced by colors like amber, honey tortoiseshell, warm browns, olive, and antique gold. Cooler undertones may thrive with plum, deep burgundy, navy, gray-blue, and silver. Rich, deep skin tones can look stunning in colors that aren’t typically found in mainstream eyewear—such as terracotta, ochre, forest green, translucent caramel, and warm rose.

Two additional tricks are helpful. Clear and translucent acetates are among the most versatile frames, as they allow your skin tone to be visible rather than competing with it. Additionally, a frame that complements the color of your hair—whether natural, dyed, braided, or styled with a wig—will usually appear intentional rather than accidental.

Let Your Brows Do the Talking

Frames and eyebrows share the same space, so they need to work together.

If your eyebrows are bold and well-defined, opting for a thinner metal frame allows the brows to remain the focal point. Conversely, if your brows are soft and understated, a thicker acetate frame can provide the facial structure you desire. Issues arise only when both compete for attention.

Lenses can also alter how makeup appears. An anti-reflective coating is worth considering as it can reduce glare that obscures your eyes in photos and video calls. Additionally, eye makeup may appear more subdued behind lenses, so you might opt for a slightly brighter shade or more definition than when not wearing glasses. Since frames draw attention to the upper part of your face, a bold lip color can create a perfect balance. Applying cream blush slightly higher on the cheeks, just below the frame line, keeps the face appearing lifted.

Build a Rotation, Not a Forever Pair

A key change in perspective is realizing that just as you have multiple pairs of shoes, you can have multiple pairs of glasses.

The traditional approach—saving up for one expensive pair to wear until they wear out—was sensible when frames were priced like heirlooms. However, this is no longer necessary. The rise of online eyewear shopping has revolutionized the market, making it feasible to own a rotation of three frames, which is often more affordable than purchasing a single high-end pair from a conventional optician.

Think of it as a capsule. Have one neutral pair for everyday use that complements any outfit and withstands school runs, commutes, and extended screen time. Choose one statement pair—whether oversized, colorful, or cat-eye—for days when you want your glasses to make a statement. Additionally, consider a pair that diverges from your usual style, offering a quick way to refresh your appearance.

Pay attention to prescription accuracy. When purchasing online, select a retailer with qualified optical professionals who review orders rather than just processing the information you provide. Brands like Aoolia incorporate this review step, which can be the difference between a good deal and a pair that causes discomfort by mid-afternoon. Ensure you upload your prescription, confirm your pupillary distance, and use virtual try-on features to narrow down your choices before making a decision.

Fit Is the Invisible Detail

Poor fit can make glasses appear cheap, while a good fit can elevate an affordable pair, making them look premium.

Ensure three aspects are checked:

  • The bridge: Frames should sit comfortably without pinching or sliding down when you look at your phone. If they constantly slip, a low-bridge or Asian-fit design with different nose-pad placement might be required. This is a fit issue, not a facial issue, and many endure it needlessly.
  • The temples: The arms should align with the sides of your head and curve behind your ears without applying pressure.
  • And the width: If the arms bow outward at the hinges, the frame is too narrow.

Most of these adjustments can be made in minutes at an optical shop, often at little or no cost. It’s a small investment of time that can significantly enhance your eyewear.

Wear Them Like You Mean It

The women who stand out most in glasses aren’t necessarily those who found the “perfect” frame. Instead, they are the ones who embrace eyewear as a deliberate choice, matching frames to their mood like one would pair shoes with an outfit.

So go ahead, choose the color that keeps catching your eye. Order that oversized pair. Let people see your face. Glasses aren’t meant to hide you. Worn with confidence, they can be one of the most interesting accessories you wear all day.
