Then you’ve got to get another red, then you’ve got to get a color, then you’ve got to get another red…”

And this is where physics comes into play. Goodwin explains that the key to controlling the cue ball is understanding how it reacts to different types of spin, or “English,” as it’s known in the UK. By applying top spin, back spin, or side spin to the cue ball, players can make it move in predictable ways, setting themselves up for their next shot.

“You can’t just think of the cue ball going straight; you’ve got to think of the cue ball in terms of its trajectory, and how it’s going to interact with the other balls on the table,” Goodwin says. “And if you can’t think in three dimensions, you’re going to be in trouble.”

And it’s not just the cue ball that players have to think about—it’s the object balls too. Goodwin says that when players are setting up their next shot, they have to think not only about how to pot the ball they’re aiming for, but also how to leave the cue ball in a good position for their next shot. “It’s like playing chess,” he says. “You’ve got to think a few moves ahead.”

The perfect break

So, back to Mark Allen’s perfect break. What made his achievement so special was not just the fact that he managed to pot 36 balls in a row, but the precision with which he did it. Each shot had to be carefully planned, with the cue ball positioned just right for the next shot in the sequence.

And while a 147 break may be rare, it’s not impossible. Goodwin says that with enough practice and skill, any player could theoretically achieve the perfect break. “It’s all about understanding the physics of the game, and being able to apply that knowledge in a high-pressure situation,” he says. “And that’s what makes snooker such a thrilling sport to watch.”

So there you have it: the magic of snooker, where physics meets precision meets nerves of steel. It may be a game of skill and strategy, but when it all comes together, it’s a thing of beauty.

But as it slows down, it catches and spins backward.

The table also plays a role in the break of a snooker ball. Goodwin points out that the impact between the cue ball and object ball is never perfectly elastic, meaning that some energy is lost as heat. But the cushioning around the table can also play a role, as can the amount of chalk on the cue tip and the nap of the tablecloth.

“A lot of players will chalk their cue before every shot,” says Goodwin. “What that does is it reduces the amount of [spin] you impart to the ball. If you want to impart a lot, you don’t chalk the cue, because then you’re going to have a lot of friction between the ball and the cue, and you can put a lot more spin on it.”

Understanding all these factors is key to mastering cue ball control in snooker. Goodwin sums it up succinctly: “You have to understand how the ball’s going to behave when it hits another ball, and then you can start to control it.” And that’s why cue ball control is absolutely crucial in the game of snooker. The mesmerizing game of snooker is a fine art that requires precision, skill, and an innate understanding of physics. As the cue ball glides across the table, the extreme spin imparted by the player takes hold, and in a moment of magic, the ball just… stops. This moment of stillness is a testament to the intricate dance between the player, the table, and the laws of physics.

Each snooker table is unique, with some creating more friction than others. According to experts, the first few frames of a match can be a bit scrappy as players adjust to the nuances of the table. The cloth itself has a nap, meaning it has a direction that can affect the trajectory of the balls. Potting a ball up the table versus down the table requires a keen understanding of these subtle differences to avoid under or over hitting shots.

Another crucial element of the snooker table is the cushions. In an ideal situation, a ball should be reflected off the cushion at the same angle it made contact. However, add a bit of spin to the ball, and suddenly it behaves in unexpected ways, bouncing off at angles that defy logic.

Professional snooker players may not consciously think about the physics at play, but their instinctive understanding of how the balls will react is honed through thousands of hours of practice. For those of us who can’t dedicate that much time to the game, a basic understanding of cue ball-object ball interactions can provide a valuable edge when playing pool at the local bar.

In the end, the beauty of snooker lies in its blend of skill, strategy, and an unspoken dialogue between player and table. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual player, the physics of snooker adds an extra layer of fascination to this timeless game. So next time you line up a shot, remember that behind every seemingly simple movement of the ball lies a complex interplay of forces and angles that make snooker the captivating sport that it is.
