iOS 18 has brought a lot of exciting updates, including a major enhancement to the Notes app that allows users to record voice memos directly within the app. This feature is incredibly useful for a variety of situations, from taking notes during lectures and interviews to capturing your own personal thoughts and ideas. What sets this feature apart is that the app can transcribe your voice memos in real-time as you speak.

To start recording a voice memo in the Notes app, simply open a note on your iPhone and tap the paperclip icon on the toolbar. From there, select “Record Audio” to bring up the recording interface. You can start recording by pressing the large red button and pause or resume the recording as needed. The playback controls are intuitive, allowing you to listen to your recording and navigate through it easily.

One of the standout features of this update is the ability to view a real-time transcription of your voice memo as you speak. By tapping on the speech bubble in the lower left corner, you can switch between the sound wave view and the transcription view. This can be incredibly helpful for reviewing your notes later on or sharing them with others.

If you have Apple Intelligence enabled on your iPhone, you can take advantage of additional features like a summary of your recording and the ability to rename your clips for easier organization. Once you’re satisfied with your recording, simply tap “Done” to save it in the note.

Accessing your voice notes is also straightforward within the app. Recordings appear as embeds within notes, allowing you to easily play them back. You can tap on the title of the voice recording to access the full transcription and make any edits or additions as needed. The menu options also give you the flexibility to copy the transcript, search through it, save the audio clip to the Files app, or share it with other apps.
