Instagram Map: A New Feature for Location Sharing
Instagram has recently rolled out a new feature called Instagram Map, which allows U.S. users to share their most recent active location with others and discover location-based content. This feature is similar to Snap Map but with some distinct differences.
If you choose to enable your location on Instagram Map, your location will only update when you open the app or have it running in the background. This means that it does not provide continuous, real-time location updates like Snap Map does. Users have the option to select whether their location is updated only when they open the app or in real-time.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has ensured that location sharing is turned off by default on Instagram Map. This decision was made in response to concerns around privacy and safety. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has reassured users that the feature is opt-in, and some users may be confused about how it works.
One aspect of Instagram Map that users need to be aware of is that the feature automatically pulls in location tags from recently posted Stories or Reels that include a tagged location. While this information was already visible to users in the map view, the new feature makes it much easier to access. This may prompt users to reconsider posting Stories and Reels with location tags, especially if they are still at the location.
How to Access Instagram Map
To access the Instagram Map feature, users need to navigate to their direct messages (DMs) page and tap on the new “Map” option at the top. Upon first accessing the feature, users will likely see a pop-up message informing them about the new Map. The pop-up will clarify that no one can see their location until it is shared and that settings can be changed at any time.
How to Set Your Location-Sharing Preferences
When users open Instagram Map for the first time, they will be prompted to select who can see their location. Options include sharing with Friends (followers you follow back), Close Friends, select users, or no one. To change these preferences, users can navigate to their profile, tap on the settings option, select “Story, live and location,” and then tap on the “Location sharing” button.
Even if a user has location sharing turned off, they can still see the locations of others who have shared their location on the map.
How to Use Instagram Map
Upon opening the app, users will see the locations of friends who have shared their location as well as location-based Stories and Reels from people they follow. This allows users to discover new content based on their location. Additionally, users can leave short messages, known as “Notes,” on the map for others to see.
Overall, Instagram Map offers a new way for users to share their location and discover location-based content on the platform. By understanding how the feature works and adjusting their settings accordingly, users can make the most of this new addition to the Instagram experience.
