After a four-month absence, U.S. Representative Tom Kean Jr. from New Jersey resumed his duties in Congress this week, sharing that he had been hospitalized for depression.

Through his disclosure, he sheds light on the personal struggles of public figures, prompting the nation to reflect on its attitudes toward mental health.

In the following weeks, the reactions from his congressional colleagues, media, and the public will be telling. Will his political adversaries question his capability? Will the media reduce his identity to his mental health condition, or will they highlight that depression is a widespread, manageable condition affecting people across all walks of life?

This situation extends beyond Congress, as countless Americans battling depression will observe closely.

Public admissions of mental health issues test societal norms. Will courage be met with support or skepticism? Will showing vulnerability be seen as a strength or a weakness?

Thus, Kean’s narrative transcends his personal journey.

In addressing his peers, Kean depicted depression as a profound illness, both physically and emotionally impactful. He emphasized that “until you experience it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be” and acknowledged “there is no timeline for healing.”

These insights are not just personal reflections; they are critical public health messages.

Depression is a medical condition, not a personal failing. Recovery varies for each individual, and seeking help should be seen as a sign of strength.

Initially, Kean chose to keep his condition private, which is understandable. Personal medical information is primarily a private matter. However, once he decided to go public, his situation became relevant to his peers, constituents, and the broader American public.

Depression is not selective; it affects people across the political spectrum and from all walks of life, regardless of their professional or socioeconomic status.

Kean joins a small, diverse group of politicians who have publicly addressed their mental health struggles, illustrating that depression does not adhere to political boundaries.

Following his statement, Representative Ritchie Torres, who has also spoken openly about his treatment for depression, expressed empathy but insisted that extended absences from public office warrant justification. While accountability to the public is essential, it should not come at the cost of medical privacy, which deserves the same respect as physical health.

This expectation extends to workplaces nationwide.

Employees often feel pressured to reveal more than they wish about health issues due to concerns that their absence might be viewed with suspicion. They fear that their illness will be judged on its severity and necessity of treatment.

Compassion should not come at the expense of privacy.

Whether in Congress or on a factory floor, medical privacy should apply equally to mental health as it does to physical conditions.

While the debate around Kean unfolds, many employees are privately questioning their own workplace environments.

If I disclosed my depression to my employer, what would happen?

For many, the uncertainty is daunting.

They worry about being perceived as unreliable and fear losing trust and opportunities. They wonder if colleagues will distance themselves or if managers will judge them based on their diagnosis rather than their capabilities.

The heaviest burden of depression is often the fear that honesty will change everything, and this fear should be a concern for all business leaders.

Research by the Health Action Alliance indicates that while most employers believe reducing stigma would enhance employee well-being and performance, many fail to recognize stigma as an issue in their own workplaces and lack the tools to assess employee needs. Consequently, employees often refrain from discussing stigmatized conditions with supervisors or HR.

Employees remain silent while employers assume all is well. Silence should not be mistaken for health.

American businesses have invested in employee well-being through assistance programs, mental health benefits, and wellness initiatives.

These are valuable efforts.

However, psychological safety depends on more than just benefits. It relies on whether employees feel they can disclose their struggles without fear.

If employees perceive asking for help as a risk, it transforms depression from a health issue to a business concern.

Untreated depression leads to absenteeism, burnout, turnover, reduced productivity, and impaired innovation. Organizations focus on boosting engagement but often overlook the core obstacle: a culture where honesty feels unsafe.

The essential takeaway from Kean’s experience is that depression is widespread, and access to care is crucial.

Kean had the resources and time to seek treatment and recover before resuming work. Many Americans do not have this luxury.

Some delay treatment due to costs, others struggle to locate mental health professionals, and many fear losing income or employment if they prioritize their health.

Media portrayal is also significant. Coverage of depression can either perpetuate stereotypes or encourage seeking help. Headlines that sensationalize mental illness may draw attention but also influence public perception negatively.

Every day, employers, colleagues, friends, and families face choices in response to someone struggling. Do they offer support or distance themselves? Do they foster recovery or perpetuate silence?

These responses send messages not only to the individual but also to those observing.

Kean returned to Congress because he sought treatment, not because he ignored his depression.

The most vital lesson from his story is that recovery is achievable. Treatment is effective. Professional and personal lives can continue. But this is only possible when people feel safe enough to seek help.

This is why America’s reaction to Tom Kean’s disclosure is so important.

Countless individuals who will never address Congress are watching. They are determining if seeking help will lead to understanding or judgment, if honesty will be met with support or punishment, and if recovery is something to conceal or celebrate.

Kean’s brave decision to be open invites us to make a choice. We can use this moment to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness or reinforce it.

The path we choose will have a profound impact, far beyond any single congressional speech.
