Human-centric IAM is failing: Agentic AI requires a new identity control plane

The demand for deploying agentic AI is rapidly increasing across various industries. These intelligent systems have the capability to plan, take actions, and collaborate seamlessly across different business applications, promising unparalleled efficiency. However, amidst the race to automate processes, one critical aspect is often overlooked – scalable security.

Building a workforce of digital employees without providing them with a secure way to log in, access data, and perform their tasks without introducing significant risks is a major concern. The traditional identity and access management (IAM) systems, designed primarily for humans, are not equipped to handle the scale and complexity of agentic AI. Static roles, long-lived passwords, and one-time approvals, which are common in traditional IAM, become ineffective when dealing with a large number of non-human identities.

As Shawn Kanungo, a renowned keynote speaker and innovation strategist, suggests, the key to responsible AI deployment is to start with synthetic data before transitioning to real data. This approach allows organizations to validate agent workflows, scopes, and security measures in a controlled environment before exposing them to sensitive information.

The inherent vulnerability of human-centric IAM systems lies in their static nature. With agentic AI systems behaving like users, authentication processes, role assignments, and API interactions become potential entry points for security breaches. Pre-defining fixed roles for agents whose tasks and data access requirements are constantly evolving is impractical. Therefore, a shift towards continuous, runtime evaluation of access decisions is imperative to ensure accuracy and security.

To establish a robust security framework for the new age of AI, organizations need to adopt an identity-centric operating model. Each AI agent should be treated as a first-class citizen within the identity ecosystem, with a unique, verifiable identity linked to a human owner, a specific business use case, and a detailed software bill of materials. Shared service accounts are no longer sufficient, and access should be granted just-in-time, scoped to the immediate task, and automatically revoked upon completion.

Three pillars form the foundation of a scalable agent security architecture:

1. Context-aware authorization: Authorization should be a continuous conversation, evaluating the agent’s digital posture, data access requests, and operational context in real-time.
2. Purpose-bound data access: Embedding policy enforcement into the data layer ensures that data is used as intended, based on the agent’s declared purpose.
3. Tamper-evident evidence: Every access decision, data query, and API call should be logged immutably, providing a clear record of the agent’s activities for auditing and incident response purposes.

To embark on this journey towards secure agentic AI deployment, organizations can follow a practical roadmap:

– Conduct an identity inventory to catalog all non-human identities and service accounts.
– Pilot a just-in-time access platform to grant short-lived, scoped credentials for specific projects.
– Mandate short-lived credentials and eliminate static API keys and secrets.
– Establish a synthetic data sandbox to validate agent workflows before transitioning to real data.
– Conduct tabletop drills to practice responses to security incidents involving AI agents.

In conclusion, organizations must recognize the pivotal role of identity as the control plane for AI operations. By implementing runtime authorization, purpose-bound data access, and proving value on synthetic data, businesses can scale their AI workforce without escalating security risks. Embracing a modern approach to identity management is essential to navigate the complexities of the agentic AI landscape effectively.
