AI chatbots have made significant strides in answering questions, summarizing documents, and solving mathematical equations. However, they still primarily function as individual assistants, lacking the ability to facilitate real collaboration tasks such as coordinating people with differing priorities, tracking ongoing decisions, and maintaining team alignment over time.

Enter Humans&, a new startup founded by former employees of Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and Google DeepMind. The company recently secured a $480 million seed round to develop a “central nervous system” for the human-plus-AI economy. While initial reports have focused on Humans&’s “AI for empowering humans” concept, the true innovation lies in their goal of creating a foundation model architecture tailored for social intelligence rather than just information retrieval or code generation.

Andi Peng, a co-founder of Humans& and former Anthropic employee, believes that the current AI landscape is transitioning from specialized vertical models to a new era where users are grappling with how to effectively utilize these technologies. The startup aims to address the coordination challenges present in workflows as companies shift from chat-based systems to more advanced AI agents.

Humans& envisions a product that will revolutionize communication and collaboration, bridging the gap between individuals and AI tools. Co-founder and CEO Eric Zelikman emphasizes the importance of creating a model that can mimic human interaction, fostering a sense of camaraderie and understanding in collaborative settings.

The startup’s approach involves training the model to ask questions in a manner that feels natural and engaging, akin to conversing with a friend or colleague. Unlike traditional chatbots, which focus on immediate user satisfaction and question accuracy, Humans& aims to prioritize user understanding and long-term collaboration.

While the specifics of Humans&’s product remain nebulous, the company is committed to co-evolving the model and interface to create a cohesive and effective solution for communication and collaboration. Rather than integrating with existing tools, Humans& seeks to establish itself as the go-to platform for team collaboration.

In a rapidly evolving landscape where AI is increasingly integrated into productivity tools, Humans& faces competition from established players and tech giants investing in AI-enabled collaboration features. Despite the risks and challenges ahead, the startup remains focused on its mission to revolutionize how people interact with AI models.

With a team of seasoned experts and a strong vision for the future, Humans& is poised to make a lasting impact on the AI industry. The company’s commitment to innovation and social intelligence sets it apart from its competitors, positioning it as a potential game-changer in the realm of collaboration and communication technologies.
