The smartphone market is dominated by big brands like Apple, Google, and Samsung, each vying for a larger share of the market. However, the issue that keeps cropping up is the lack of innovation in phone design. Year after year, these flagship models see only minor changes, leading to a sense of sameness across brands.

With Apple holding a significant share of the market in the US and Samsung closely following, there is a constant push to encroach on each other’s territory. This results in conservative design decisions that do little to differentiate one brand from another. The Google Pixel 9a, for example, has been likened to an iPhone with its rounded corners and dual-rear camera design.

Similarly, leaks about the upcoming iPhone 17 Air suggest a design reminiscent of the Google Pixel 8a, blurring the lines between brands even further. Samsung, on the other hand, struggles to stand out with its featureless Galaxy S series, making it difficult for other brands to imitate or distinguish their design.

While the Pixel 9a and Galaxy S25 may be solid devices, they lack the flair that consumers crave. However, where big brands fall short in design innovation, budget and mid-range options like the Nothing Phone and CMF Phone 2 Pro are stepping up. These devices offer unique features like light-up glyphs and customizable accessories, providing a refreshing change from the standard offerings.

In a market saturated with similar-looking smartphones, the push for ultra-thin designs seems to be the only area where brands are willing to take risks. The upcoming iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge are set to compete in this space, with incredibly thin profiles that sacrifice functionality for aesthetics.

Ultimately, consumers are looking for smartphones that not only meet their needs but also excite them with innovative design. While the big brands may be playing it safe, smaller players are pushing the boundaries and offering something different. It’s time for the industry leaders to take note and inject some much-needed creativity into their designs.
