Esteemed investor Peter Lynch, known for his successful tenure at the Fidelity Magellan Fund, recently made headlines by revealing that he does not hold any artificial intelligence (AI) stocks in his portfolio. Lynch, who managed an impressive average annual return of 29.2% during his 13-year stint at Magellan, shared his views on a podcast called “The Compound and Friends.”

During the podcast, Lynch confessed, “I have zero AI stocks. I literally couldn’t pronounce Nvidia until about eight months ago.” Despite the recent surge in the AI sector, Lynch has remained on the sidelines, refraining from discussing his current portfolio or preferred stocks due to Fidelity’s rules.

When asked if investors have over-pursued the AI trade, Lynch responded with uncertainty, emphasizing the importance of understanding the companies one invests in. This principle is a cornerstone of his investment philosophy, as outlined in his book “One Up on Wall Street.”

Despite his lack of investment in AI stocks, Lynch’s track record as an investor lends credibility to his stance. His cautious approach serves as a reminder to investors not to get swept away by industry hype but to invest based on a thorough understanding of the company and its industry.

Lynch, who admitted to having a limited understanding of technology, reassured employees concerned about AI taking over their jobs by stating, “It’s a great country. We’re creative.” This sentiment comes at a time when executives at companies like Walmart and Accenture have raised concerns about AI’s potential impact on their workforces.

Overall, Lynch’s decision to steer clear of AI stocks despite their recent boom underscores the importance of staying true to one’s investment principles. His emphasis on thorough research and understanding of companies before investing serves as a valuable lesson for investors looking to navigate today’s competitive market landscape.
