As soon as the cool weather of fall arrives, the notion of cozy vibes fills the air.
Every October, I find myself craving items that are exclusively comforting and snugly. Whether it’s sipping on a steaming pumpkin spice latte or swathing a giant scarf around myself like Lenny Kravitz, my distaste for the cold is strong. This time of year, warmth and layering become my top priorities, rendering me a fashionable Michelin Man until the season warms up. Fortunately, street style icons from this past fashion month have shown us that staying bundled can still look fabulous.
While exploring the lively street style scene, I noted several outfits that successfully blend striking visuals with cozy practicality. A standout piece that achieves this dual goal? The checkered flannel shirt. This season, it was practically ubiquitous on the runways, worn by everyone from supermodels like Adwoa Aboah to TiKTok sensations like Jake Fleming. Now, I feel an urgent need to acquire one for the chilly days that lie ahead.

This is undoubtedly a season-defining piece. Let’s face it: When you picture a plaid flannel shirt, you might imagine a lumberjack or a relaxed look for home when the thermostat malfunctions. Yet, the style influencers show that when paired with more sophisticated clothing, these shirts can appear truly elevated. The styles I observed varied: both Aboah and Fleming teamed their shirts with classic light-wash denim, invoking a nostalgic ’90s-grunge aesthetic. (Fleming even complemented his outfit with a polka-dot tie and a leather jacket.) Others, like Jalil Johnson, took a sleek route by pairing their flannels with a simple black tee and tailored black trousers, adorned with statement accessories.

While flannels may be enjoying their moment under the street style spotlight, this trend has been simmering over the last few seasons. On the runways, brands like The Row and Bottega Veneta have showcased their luxurious takes on plaid shirts. Moreover, companies like God’s True Cashmere have made these pieces their hallmark, offering opulent variations that can exceed$2,000. So yes, swaddling yourself in a shirt that feels like a blanket is attainable, and it can look fantastic. As the fashion world embraces the humble flannel, I am set to embark on the cozy season in style.
