Former India cricketer Madan Lal has shared his surprise at Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series in England. The 1983 World Cup-winning player believes that it wasn’t Kohli’s form or fitness that led to this decision, but rather the mental toll that the game had taken on him.

Madan Lal expressed his thoughts in an interview with Mid-Day, stating that Kohli should have played the Test series in England before making such a significant decision. He mentioned that while Kohli’s form may not have been the same as it was five years ago, it’s natural for a player to evolve and adapt over time.

The 74-year-old former chairman of selectors also highlighted Kohli’s intelligence as a batsman, praising his focus on fitness and his ability to handle the expectations of the Indian cricket fans. Lal speculated that Kohli’s decision may have been influenced by a desire to prioritize his family and personal life.

Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket comes on the heels of regular captain Rohit Sharma also stepping down from the red-ball format. The duo had previously retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Kohli leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Test cricket, with 9230 runs in 123 Tests, including 30 centuries. Madan Lal commended Kohli’s leadership skills, stating that the selectors should have supported him when he initially stepped down as captain in January 2022. Kohli remains India’s most successful Test captain with 40 wins in 68 matches.

In conclusion, Madan Lal believes that Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket was a personal one, influenced by a combination of mental fatigue and a desire to focus on other aspects of his life. The former cricketer lauded Kohli’s contributions to Indian cricket and expressed his admiration for the batsman’s intelligence and dedication to the game.

The rewritten content seamlessly integrates the key points from the original article and provides a fresh perspective on Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket.
