How dire is the situation on the political left, particularly when it comes to dissenters, in the glamorous enclave of Hollywood?
It’s so precarious that one prominent heterodox Democratâs spouse, who dared to voice dissent against former President Joe Bidenâfrom a rather curious perch now within President Donald Trumpâs cabinetâwas suggested a fictitious separation from her partner to protect her career from the backlash.
Actress Cheryl Hines, perhaps most recognized for her role alongside Larry David in HBOâs âCurb Your Enthusiasm,â disclosed to CBS News that her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., proposed a mock separation as a shield against the potential fallout that could result from a perceived lack of loyalty to the Democratic party.
This eyebrow-raising offer occurred as he embarked on his campaign against Biden in 2023, sparked by his outspoken criticism of vaccine mandates linked to COVID-19. The topic resurfaced in Hinesâ memoir âUnscripted,â especially given her husbandâs current role leading the Department of Health and Human Services.
In her recent interview with CBSâ Natalie Morales, Hines recounted Kennedyâs suggestion that they feign separation to alleviate scrutiny on her. âWas that even a consideration at the time?â Morales inquired.
âNo,â Hines responded. âI didnât grasp how that would help. I didnât. But I appreciated his concern.â
She candidly shared her struggles as a political spouse, revealing that many in the Hollywood circle found it challenging to maintain friendships with her after RFK Jr. distanced himself from the liberal platform. Regarding her onscreen partner, David, a devout Democrat, she mused, âThatâs a question for Larry, but letâs be honestâhe probably doesnât love it.â
This predicament isnât a revelation; it harkens back to a 2023 profile in The New York Times, which chronicled RFK Jr.âs presidential ambitions under the title, âRobert F. Kennedy Jr. Wants to Be President. Cheryl Hines Is Along for the Ride.â
As recounted in the article:
Mr. Kennedy described the turmoil they faced, stating, âI saw how it was affecting her life and I suggested we announce our separation, just so you could have some space from me. We wouldnât be doing anything, but I was desperate to protect her during a time when my actions were impacting her.â
He even drafted a press release, though it never saw the light of day. Hines remarked that this was never a viable option, though she did express frustration over some of his phrasing, worried that snippets could misrepresent his true intention.
Months later, the conversation turned toward his political aspirations, with Ms. Hines affirming, âIt was absolutely a discussion, as he said, âIf you donât want me to do it, I wonât.ââ Ultimately, she consented.
Given RFK Jr.âs polarizing views on vaccines and his critiques of Biden, these intimate matters had significant implications. Meanwhile, internal Democratic machinery appeared to tilt in Biden’s favor until an event drew attention:

By that juncture, RFK Jr. had already pivoted to an independent candidacy, only to subsequently endorse Trump two months later, amidst the â107 Daysâ that Kamala Harris now bemoans as insufficient time to establish her stance, attributing it to Bidenâs reluctance to step aside early enough.
With Trump occupying the presidency, RFK Jr.âs health ideas have sparked interest within the current administration. Though not seated in the Oval Office himself, his standing among Hollywood elites has arguably deteriorated. Merely opposing Biden and questioning COVID vaccine policies was enough to unleash the wrath of Tinseltownâs powerful.
If this situation doesnât exemplify âTrump Derangement Syndromeâ as an affliction particularly rampant in the Golden Stateâso pronounced that faking a separation became a topic of discussion for RFK Jr. and his wifeâthen Iâm uncertain what would be.
