The PhD in Visual Arts: Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Art Theory at IDSVA is a research-oriented, low-residency program tailored for artists and thinkers eager to explore the frontiers of art, culture, and the human experience.

The innovative IDSVA curriculum integrates engaging online education with immersive residencies, enabling art professionals to engage in profound scholarly work without stepping away from their teaching roles, artistic endeavors, or other career commitments. You don’t have to compromise between your professional duties and your intellectual ambitions—our program facilitates both.

Operating as a globally minded institution, IDSVA’s community spans the globe. Your educational journey includes dynamic online seminars paired with intensive residencies in locations such as Rome, Spannocchia Castle in Tuscany, Siena, Venice, Berlin, Athens, Madrid, Marrakech, Mexico City, and New York City.

“After joining Georgia State University in 2015, I achieved tenure in 2020 thanks to the insights, publications, and exhibitions I gained from my time at IDSVA. The program enriched my CV in countless ways.”

— Dr. Jason Hoelscher (IDSVA Alumnus 2019), author of Art as Information Ecology: Artworks, Artworlds, and Complex Systems Aesthetics (Duke University Press 2021) and Full Professor at Georgia Southern University

For International Candidates: While we operate as a nomadic institution, IDSVA is considered a US-based program. We welcome applications from students abroad, who can pursue their doctoral studies from their home countries. Although IDSVA can provide F-1 visas for a one-week residency in the US, these visas do not allow for full-time residency.

Interested in learning more? Schedule a discussion with Dr. Jeanne Moore, our Admissions Director.

Submit your application now for the 2026 cohort. The deadline for May 2026 applications is December 8, 2025. For inquiries, email info@idsva.edu.
