The realm of speculative design opens up a world of possibilities, where imagination meets critical thinking to envision alternative futures that challenge our current reality. What if an AI-led totalitarian regime banned analogue technology? What if climate catastrophes forced us to live underwater? What if our emotions were no longer private but visible to all?
These are the thought-provoking questions that drive speculative design, a discipline that goes beyond traditional notions of aesthetics and functionality to explore the intersections of creativity and research. At IED Firenze, students in the Master’s in Graphic Design program delved deep into this forward-thinking approach as part of their Research and Trend Forecasting course, under the guidance of professor Isabella Ahmadzadeh.
Located in Florence, IED Firenze serves as a melting pot of innovation, culture, and creativity, where students from diverse backgrounds converge to push the boundaries of design. The school’s blend of Italian craftsmanship and contemporary vision sets the stage for bold experimentation across various disciplines.
Each student embarked on a unique journey to create a 32-page visual essay, rooted in a “what if” scenario that served as the conceptual bedrock for their exploration. From dystopian projections to societal critiques, these essays became immersive spaces for experimentation, where collage, personal artwork, typography, and AI-generated imagery intersected to bring speculative futures to life.
The resulting collection of visual narratives transcends mere design showcase, delving into the trajectory of our world, examining forthcoming cultural and technological shifts, and ultimately showcasing the transformative power of design in reshaping our reality.

In these visually compelling narratives, students like Lara Piknovik, Riya Allen, Nick Arbelaez, and Nicole Ferraresi presented their unique perspectives on the future through a blend of artistry and critical thinking. From holograms of people on black backgrounds to memory scans with brainwave patterns, each visual essay offers a glimpse into a possible future shaped by emerging trends and societal shifts.
As we navigate the complexities of our world, speculative design serves as a beacon of creativity and critical reflection, inviting us to reimagine the world around us and consider the implications of our choices on future generations. Through the visionary work of these students, we are reminded of the transformative power of design in shaping our collective destiny.
