Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem fell victim to a brazen theft during Easter dinner when her Gucci purse was snatched by an illegal migrant named Mario Bustamante-Leiva. This wasn’t his first offense, as just a few weeks earlier, he was arrested in New York for a similar crime but was let go with just a desk appearance ticket and court date.

Surveillance footage captured Bustamante-Leiva casually stealing Noem’s purse, which contained $3,000 cash, her passport, wallet, and government ID, before hopping on a bus to a restaurant where he proceeded to spend over $200 on her American Express card. This high-profile theft was just one of four he committed in a span of eight days.

Bustamante-Leiva has a history of theft, with previous arrests in Utah and London for similar crimes. In New York, he was caught stealing a fanny pack and making unauthorized credit card charges within minutes. Despite his criminal record, he was let go with just a desk appearance ticket, as sanctuary laws prevented the NYPD from reporting him to federal immigration authorities.

It is believed that Bustamante-Leiva and his accomplice, Cristian Rodrigo Montecino-Sanzana, are part of a larger robbery organization operating on the East Coast. Bustamante-Leiva admitted to being an alcoholic with memory problems but claimed to remember stealing Noem’s purse. He spent the stolen money on alcohol, gift cards, and stays at various hotels.

Authorities finally apprehended Bustamante-Leiva in Washington, DC, where he was taken into custody. His accomplice was also arrested in Miami the following day. The investigation into their criminal activities is ongoing, with surveillance footage and witness testimonies providing crucial evidence against them.

Overall, Bustamante-Leiva’s criminal exploits highlight the need for stronger policies to prevent repeat offenders from committing crimes and evading justice. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilant law enforcement and the consequences of leniency towards criminals.
