A dedicated aviation enthusiast in Marengo, Illinois, has been diligently working on a remarkable project for the past 40 years—fully restoring a World War II-era B-17 bomber. Mike Kellner, fueled by his passion for aviation, embarked on this journey back in high school when he purchased the remains of the historic bomber from a junkyard in Maine for a mere $7,000. Transporting the disassembled parts halfway across the country on a house trailer, Kellner has since housed the 75-foot aluminum behemoth in his roadside barn.

Kellner’s restoration project has not been a solitary endeavor. Over the years, fellow aviation enthusiasts have volunteered their time to assist with the meticulous restoration process. From performing repairs to tracking down rare and hard-to-find parts, Kellner has dedicated countless hours to bring the B-17 back to its former glory. Documenting the entire journey on a Facebook page since 2010, Kellner’s ultimate goal is not just to create a visually stunning display piece but to actually make the plane fly once again.

The B-17 bomber holds significant historical value, being the most iconic bomber utilized by the US military during World War II. Originating from a 1934 Army Air Corps request to Boeing for a bomber capable of long-distance precision bombing, the B-17 featured advanced technologies like the Norden bombsight for accurate bombing at high altitudes. With production ramping up after the US officially entered the war in 1941, the B-17 earned the moniker “Flying Fortress” due to its impressive arsenal of weaponry and size.

Kellner’s B-17, affectionately named “Desert Rat,” carries the hopes and dreams of a dedicated enthusiast aiming to soar through the skies once more. Despite the daunting task ahead and the modest budget and limited time he works with, Kellner remains determined to achieve his goal of flying the Desert Rat. Updates on the restoration progress can be followed on his official Facebook page.

The story of Mike Kellner and his quest to revive a piece of aviation history is a testament to the passion and dedication of enthusiasts preserving the legacy of iconic aircraft. As Kellner continues to work tirelessly in his roadside barn, the dream of seeing the Desert Rat take flight once again serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of aviation enthusiasts worldwide. In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From work deadlines to social obligations, there never seems to be a dull moment. However, it’s important to remember to take a step back and prioritize self-care in order to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Self-care can take many different forms, depending on the individual and their specific needs. It could be as simple as taking a few minutes each day to meditate or practice deep breathing exercises. Or it could involve more indulgent activities such as treating yourself to a spa day or going on a weekend getaway.

One important aspect of self-care is ensuring that you are taking care of your physical health. This means getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly. Taking care of your body is essential in order to have the energy and stamina to tackle all of life’s challenges.

Another important aspect of self-care is taking care of your mental health. This can involve seeking therapy or counseling if needed, practicing mindfulness and stress-reducing techniques, and setting boundaries with others to protect your own well-being. It’s important to prioritize your mental health just as much as your physical health, as the two are closely interconnected.

Self-care also involves setting aside time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s pursuing a hobby, spending time with loved ones, or simply taking a leisurely walk in nature, it’s important to make time for things that feed your soul and bring you happiness.

In a world that often glorifies busyness and productivity, it can be easy to overlook the importance of self-care. However, taking the time to prioritize your own well-being is essential in order to lead a fulfilling and balanced life. So next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or stressed, remember to take a step back and prioritize self-care. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for it.
