Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently addressed speculations surrounding Lionel Messi’s potential return to the club as a player. Messi, who departed from the Camp Nou in 2021 due to financial constraints, has since played for Paris Saint-Germain and currently plies his trade with Inter Miami in MLS.

Despite being tied to Inter Miami until 2028, rumors have circulated about Messi reuniting with Barcelona, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon. However, Laporta dismissed these rumors during a recent event, stating, “I’m not going to fuel controversies or speculation about things that aren’t realistic. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Leo will always be in the collective memory of Barcelona fans.”

While a return to Barcelona as a player seems unlikely at the moment, Laporta hinted at a future tribute to Messi for his immense contributions to the club. He mentioned that the tribute should occur when the new Camp Nou opens at full capacity, with fans expressing gratitude for Messi’s impact on the team.

Interestingly, former Barca vice-president Jordi Mestre revealed that Messi and his family are not on good terms with Laporta following the circumstances of his departure from the club four years ago. Despite any lingering tensions, Messi continues to excel on the field for Inter Miami in the MLS.

This season, Messi has been in scintillating form, registering 43 goals and 24 assists in 48 games across all competitions. His standout performances in the MLS Cup play-offs, with six goals and five assists in five games, have been instrumental in Inter Miami’s success. In the regular season, Messi notched 29 goals and 16 assists in 28 games, helping his team secure a third-place finish.

As the MLS season progresses, Messi’s influence on the pitch remains undeniable, showcasing his enduring quality and talent. While a return to Barcelona may not be on the immediate horizon, fans can look forward to a potential tribute to the legendary player when the new Camp Nou is unveiled. Messi’s legacy at Barcelona continues to resonate, and his impact on the club will be celebrated in due time.
