After a shaky start to the season, the Colorado men’s basketball team shifted their focus to defense this week, a move that paid off in a 97-88 victory against Providence. While the scoreboard showed the visitors scoring 88 points, the Buffaloes’ defense showed significant improvement, holding Providence to a .446 shooting percentage. This progress is crucial for the Buffs as they aim to improve upon last year’s last-place finish in the Big 12.

Head coach Tad Boyle was pleased with his team’s increased defensive energy, especially on the perimeter where they limited the Friars to a 6-for-25 shooting performance from beyond the arc. This was a stark contrast to Providence’s previous games where they had knocked down 24 three-pointers.

Boyle commended his team’s improved grasp of the defensive scouting report and emphasized the need to avoid fouling while maintaining strong defensive pressure. The Buffs’ depth has also been a key factor in their early success, with multiple players stepping up in different games.

Looking ahead to their next game against Alabama State, Boyle is optimistic about the team’s potential as they continue to gel and improve throughout the season. With a deep roster and a collective mindset, the Buffaloes are poised to make strides and surprise many as the season progresses.

It’s clear that defense will be a focal point for Colorado moving forward, and their commitment to improving on that end of the floor could be the key to their success this season.
