Covering the first two decades of the 21st century, from 2000 to 2019, this expansive book showcases visuals commissioned by Vogue’s global editorial director, Anna Wintour. The imagery is styled by notable figures in the industry such as Posnick, Grace Coddington, Tonne Goodman, and Camilla Nickerson. The models depicted within the pages include fashion icons like Gisele Bündchen, Karen Elson, Linda Evangelista, Karlie Kloss, Angela Lindvall, Carolyn Murphy, Joan Smalls, Lara Stone, Caroline Trentini, Christy Turlington, Amber Valletta, and Daria Werbowy, along with cultural sensations like Nicki Minaj and Dita von Teese.
“In the beginning, people didn’t know how to categorize my work,” Klein reflects in the book’s introduction. “It strayed from the polished, high-glamour fantasy that typical fashion publications usually present. My photography included raw emotion—blood, bruises, power dynamics, and a sense of isolation. It felt akin to surveillance videos or illicit film scenes. Anna Wintour understood that the best fashion challenges the norm, provoking a reevaluation of perception and taste.”
As Wintour aptly articulates in Steven Klein: Vogue, “With Steven Klein, you might provide him a dress, and he’ll transform it into an image of a girl in a dress, accompanied by a robot in a garden. It’s innovative, conceptual, and ultimately poetic.”
