The Bayan-Ölgii province in western Mongolia is home to the largest ethnic group, the Kazakh Mongolians. This region, nestled near the Altai Mountains that span across Russia, China, and Kazakhstan, has seen an increase in migration between Mongolia and Kazakhstan in recent years due to various factors like changing political climates, trade, and tourism.

Renowned Welsh photojournalist Claire Thomas embarked on a journey to explore the unique nomadic culture of the Kazakhs in this northern region, capturing astonishing encounters and 21st-century adaptations along the way. Her upcoming book, “Altai: Hunters and Herders of Mongolia” from Hemeria, is a collection of intimate photographs that document her immersion into this world.

The Kazakhs’ nomadic way of life is beautifully portrayed in Thomas’ photographs, showcasing their daily routines in traditional yurt-like homes called gers and their pastoral practices in the vast grassland steppe surrounded by rugged peaks. Horses play a crucial role in the Kazakhs’ lifestyle, bred for durability and agility to withstand extreme temperatures as they transport households between seasonal pastures and assist in herding livestock.

One of the most striking aspects of Kazakh culture is their renowned method of hunting with golden eagles. These majestic birds form a deep bond with their caretakers, continuing a centuries-old practice deeply rooted in spiritual significance. The eagles are trained to catch foxes, hares, and other mammals for food and fur, highlighting the harmonious relationship between humans, animals, and the land.

“Altai” celebrates this timeless custom, shedding light on a disappearing way of life that revolves around balance, compassion, and community. The book is now available for pre-order on the publisher’s website, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Kazakh Mongolians in western Mongolia.
