A recent event in Newport showcased the work of artist Cy Gavin, attracting a distinguished crowd that included notable figures such as Carolyn Rafaelian, Jamie and Monique Coleman, and Calvin Tomkins. The evening began with a dinner at Restoration Hall, the venue for the Boatbuilding & Restoration program at IYRS, where guests gathered to honor Gavin. The following day marked the opening of “Cy Gavin: Seven Paintings,” an exhibition organized by Art&Newport and curated by Dodie Kazanjian, a longtime contributor to Vogue.
Gavin, originally from Pittsburgh but now based in the Hudson Valley, is known for infusing his artwork with themes of nature, landscape, and cosmology. His latest works displayed in Newport draw inspiration from the surrounding environment of IYRS, situated on Newport Harbor. Gavin’s paintings reflect his interest in celestial navigation and the daily activities at the school.
During his initial visit to the campus six months prior, Gavin observed students restoring old wooden boats, which served as a catalyst for his creative process. Given the historical significance of Restoration Hall and its connection to boatbuilding, Gavin felt compelled to incorporate elements of maritime culture into his art. He sought to activate the space through his paintings, utilizing the venue’s unique positioning by the water and its relationship to the town.
The exhibition, on view for five weeks at no cost to the public, aims to engage viewers with Gavin’s site-responsive works. By transforming the gallery space into an immersive environment that complements the essence of IYRS, Gavin invites audiences to explore the intersection of art, history, and craftsmanship. The event not only celebrates Gavin’s talent but also highlights the cultural significance of Newport as a hub for artistic expression and innovation.
