A woman in New York City has gone viral for an unusual theft that has captured social media’s attention. The woman, described by some as “incredibly stupid,” was filmed stealing a Knicks-themed trash can, adorned in the team’s orange and blue colors.
Wearing an orange hat, a blue New York Knicks shirt, and jean shorts, the woman was caught on camera emptying a heap of trash from the can onto the sidewalk before walking off with it. Bystanders watched in disbelief as she made her getaway.
As the video concludes, she is seen meeting another individual wearing Knicks gear, though it remains unclear if they were acting in concert.
Commenters on the video were quick to speculate. One user joked that the trash can would soon be listed on Facebook Marketplace as “Rare Vintage Knicks Memorabilia” for $450, while another pointed out, “Girl this is Theft lol.”
The exact timing of the incident is unknown. The trash cans, created in collaboration between the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and the clothing brand Only NY, were part of a celebration for the Knicks’ NBA championship, leading up to a ticker-tape parade on Thursday.
The New York City Department of Sanitation expressed disapproval, stating, “Dumping trash onto the street and stealing public property for your own personal use are both illegal, antisocial behaviors, and not what New Yorkers do. On top of all that, doing both on camera is incredibly stupid.”
The NYPD noted they have not received any complaints regarding the incident and have no comment on any investigation.
