The Other Islands Book Fair is back at Pratt’s Brooklyn campus on April 26 and 27, bringing together more than 40 independent publishers for a two-day event focused on making, cultural production, and graphic design. This year’s fair will feature a diverse range of vendors, including Ugly Duckling Presse, Columbia Books on Architecture and the City, Gong Press, and Draw Down Books, showcasing a variety of publications that explore experimental poetry, design theory, contemporary Chinese art, graphic design, typography, and visual culture.
In addition to established publishers, the fair will also showcase thesis books from students in Pratt’s Master in Communications Design program, highlighting the evolving nature of publishing and the intersection of design and culture. The event is organized by Pratt’s Graduate Communications Design Department, reflecting a shift in design education towards a more critical and culturally engaged approach.
Graduate study at Pratt is seen as a transformative experience, where students from various backgrounds come together to deepen their practice and develop a professional purpose through inquiry, dialogue, and experimentation. The program encourages students to work across disciplines, engage with historical and emerging conversations, and navigate complex environments.
The Other Islands Book Fair not only provides exposure to the publishing industry but also serves as a platform for students, vendors, visitors, organizers, and institutions to shape New York City’s publishing culture. This shared inquiry is made visible and participatory at the fair, highlighting the collaborative and evolving nature of the field.
