India’s PC market experienced a remarkable surge in 2025, surpassing the increased demand seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. This growth was fueled by millions of first-time buyers who purchased laptops during lockdowns and subsequently upgraded their devices.
According to analysts at IDC, shipments of desktops, notebooks, and workstations in India rose by 10.2% year-over-year to reach 15.9 million units in 2025. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first time annual shipments crossed the 15-million-unit mark, surpassing previous peaks in 2021 and 2022.
The pandemic-induced lockdowns exposed many individuals in India to PCs for the first time, expanding the country’s PC user base and creating a demand for upgrades as these devices aged. Additionally, factors such as growing digitization, increased PC adoption among startups and small businesses, and improved availability of devices in smaller cities also contributed to the rising demand for PCs.
In 2025, India’s share of global PC shipments increased to 5.6% from 3.3% in 2020. This growth was part of a larger trend, as worldwide PC shipments grew by 8.1% to 284.7 million units in 2025. India remains one of the fastest-growing PC markets, with demand spreading beyond major cities.
Commercial buyers accounted for 52.9% of PC shipments in India in 2025, while the consumer segment made up the remaining 47.1%, according to IDC. Enterprise purchases were driven in part by a Windows refresh cycle, with small and medium-sized businesses and some public sector organizations now replacing older devices.
Leading PC vendors in India in 2025 included HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus. However, Apple’s Mac computers had a smaller share of India’s PC market compared to the U.S. MacBooks accounted for approximately 5.6% of India’s notebook market in 2025, whereas they held about 11% to 12% globally and 20% in the U.S., as reported by IDC.
Despite the strong performance of MacBooks in India, the market could face challenges in the near future due to rising prices and component shortages. Shenoy noted that PC shipments in India may decline by around 5% in 2026, compared to a low double-digit drop expected globally.
However, India is still expected to outperform many other markets due to its relatively low PC penetration and significant room for growth as digital adoption continues to spread across households and businesses. The market may face pressure until 2027 but is anticipated to return to growth as demand from businesses and consumers stabilizes.
