The strong bond between India and New Zealand is being shaped by the people of Invercargill, according to India’s High Commissioner.

Neeta Bhushan, the High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, recently visited Invercargill to engage with the local community.

She emphasized the importance of hearing diverse perspectives, especially from the significant Indian diaspora in Invercargill, as these insights will play a crucial role in shaping future agreements between the two nations.

Ms. Bhushan highlighted the impact of people’s views on strengthening the partnership between India and New Zealand, stating that it ultimately affects the lives of individuals.

During her visit, the High Commissioner met with representatives from the Southland Chamber of Commerce, Southland Institute of Technology (SIT), and members of the Indian diaspora residing in Southland.

Discussions revolved around the ongoing free trade negotiations between India and New Zealand, with the Invercargill Indian community expressing keen interest in promoting bilateral trade.

Opportunities for increased exports from Southland to India, particularly in farming and manufacturing sectors, were explored, along with the potential for importing services and goods like apparel, automotive components, and jewelry.

Ms. Bhushan acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Indian community in Invercargill, noting their active involvement in various sectors and their positive impact on society.

Local leaders, including Deputy Mayor Tom Campbell and SIT operations lead Daryl Haggerty, also participated in discussions during the visit.

The collaborative efforts of the Indian diaspora in Invercargill are instrumental in strengthening the ties between India and New Zealand, paving the way for a prosperous partnership.
