Bette Midler’s Hulaween Celebrates 30 Years of Green Initiatives in New York City
Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated and philanthropic events of Halloween, Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project (NYRP) annual Hulaween is a magical evening dedicated to supporting the city’s green spaces.
On its 30th anniversary, NYRP continues its mission to partner with communities in restoring parks, rejuvenating gardens, planting trees, and creating a more vibrant New York for all. The theme for this year’s celebration perfectly aligned with the organization’s goals: “Hulaween: New York, New York, a Helluva Town!”
The diverse crowd at the event showcased the myriad interpretations of New York City. Attendees donned costumes ranging from subway stations and iconic buildings to pizza rats and even a humorous portrayal of the everyday fear of being hit by a falling A/C unit.
Bette Midler, the founder of NYRP, paid homage to her roots with a playful ensemble of denim overalls and glamorous eye makeup, reflecting her showbiz charm and commitment to gardening. While accepting the Catalyst Award, she humorously remarked, “I may not be a spring chicken, or a summer chicken, I’m not even a fall chicken. I’m practically an endangered chicken at this point!” Emphasizing NYRP’s mission, she emphasized, “Access to clean, green, open spaces is a fundamental right, not a privilege.”
The event, hosted by Busy Philipps, featured quintessential New York moments that delighted guests. Billy Crystal and Marc Shaiman surprised attendees with a musical tribute, Ben Platt performed “On Broadway,” and Andy Cohen, dressed as Andy Warhol, received the Joan Kors Green Champion Award from Michael Kors in a taxi driver costume.
As the night came to a close, guests were gently reminded to wrap up the festivities and vacate Casa Cipriani’s historic venue. The City that Never Sleeps truly lived up to its reputation on this enchanting evening. – Lauren Sanchez
