Australian influencer Sam Wiedenhofer was on a mission to spread kindness across America when he met Army veteran Ed Bambas at a Michigan supermarket. Bambas’ heartbreaking story of financial struggles and loss sparked a wave of donations that has now surpassed $1.7 million.

Wiedenhofer, 22, who is currently on a US Kindness Tour through Christmas, was moved by Bambas’ story and launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised over $1.7 million as of Friday morning.

Bambas, an 88-year-old cashier at the Meijer grocery store in Brighton, retired from General Motors in 1999, only for the company to go bankrupt in 2012, wiping out his pension. To make ends meet after losing his pension and his wife, Bambas had to work full-time at the grocery store.

Wiedenhofer, whose aunt’s tragic suicide inspired him to spread kindness globally, first learned about Bambas through a follower’s comment on a video. He then traveled to Michigan and met Bambas at the supermarket, where he started filming their interaction.

Bambas shared his heartbreaking story of selling his home and property to make ends meet after losing his pension and health insurance. His wife, Joan, also became gravely ill around the same time, adding to his financial struggles.

Moved by Bambas’ resilience and strength, Wiedenhofer handed him a $400 tip after their meeting. He will present the life-changing sum of over $1.7 million to Bambas during a private surprise celebration.

Wiedenhofer sees helping people like Bambas as his purpose and is grateful for the support of the community that has made it possible to change lives. Once the funds are handed over, the GoFundMe campaign will be paused as Wiedenhofer continues to shine a light on others in need.

The story of Ed Bambas and the generosity of the community is a reminder of the impact kindness and compassion can have on someone’s life.
