Instagram takes on Snapchat with new ‘Instagram Map’

Instagram has recently launched a new feature called Instagram Map, allowing users to share their most recent active location with others and discover location-based content. This move by the Meta-owned social network mirrors Snapchat’s popular Snap Map feature, which has over 400 million monthly active users.

Unlike Snap Map, Instagram Map has location sharing turned off by default, with a user’s location only updating when they open the app. This means it does not provide real-time location updates like Snap Map does. However, Instagram does offer real-time location sharing via direct messages, but only for up to one hour.

The new map feature aims to make it easier for friends to coordinate hangouts and explore location-based content shared by friends and favorite creators. Users can discover events, restaurants, and more based on the content posted by others on the map. Additionally, users can leave short messages, known as “Notes,” on the map for others to see.

Instagram Map also introduces a new way for users to interact with content through reposts. This feature allows users to repost public reels and feed posts, sharing their interests with others and helping creators reach a wider audience. Users can add a note to their reposts by typing into a thought bubble that appears on the screen.

Furthermore, Instagram is expanding its “Friends” tab in Reels globally, enabling users to see public reels that their friends have liked, commented on, reposted, and created. For those who prefer to browse and interact with content privately, Instagram is introducing the option to opt out of having their engagement displayed in the friends tab. Users can hide their likes, comments, and reposts or mute them from specific people they follow.

The new map feature is currently rolling out in the United States, with global availability coming soon. Users can access Instagram Map at the top of their direct messaging inbox. This launch follows Instagram’s development of the map feature last year and presents an opportunity for the platform to appeal to users who were fans of Zenly, a social map app that Snap acquired and shut down in 2023.

In conclusion, Instagram’s introduction of Instagram Map, reposts, and the expanded Friends tab in Reels demonstrates the platform’s commitment to enhancing user engagement and content discovery. By borrowing elements from popular features on other social media platforms, Instagram continues to evolve and provide new ways for users to connect and share their experiences.
