This autumn marks an exciting new chapter at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM), showcasing striking new exhibitions including Kara Walker. Burning Village and a thought-provoking group exhibition, Inhabiting the Shadows, featuring prominent artists like Louise Bourgeois and Cindy Sherman.

Under the dynamic leadership of director Blanca de la Torre, IVAM is set to unveil a series of impactful exhibitions this autumn, reflecting a renewed commitment to its roots as a vital cultural institution. Along with notable visual arts shows, the museum will enhance its offerings with various activities, including film screenings through the launch of the IVAM film club, and musical performances featuring Maestro Espada, Gala i Ovidio, and Versonautas, along with guided exhibition walkthroughs led by soprano Quiteria Muñoz. Moreover, the Museo Anfibio will delve into contemporary art, intertwining traditional wisdom and environmental efforts.

The season kicks off on September 25 with Kara Walker. Burning Village, showcasing 44 significant pieces by the renowned artist, including several of her hallmark prints. This exhibition serves as an introduction to Inhabiting the Shadows, a collective exhibition exploring themes of individual and collective memory through the lens of influential artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Carmen Calvo, Cindy Sherman, Douglas Gordon, Joseph Beuys, Lucebert, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Later in the season, IVAM will present Hidden Spain by renowned photographer Cristina García Rodero, whose project captures the essence of various festivals, ceremonies, rites, and traditions through an extensive documentation process conducted across Spanish villages from 1973 to 1989.

Staying true to its mission, IVAM aims to foster the visibility of emerging artists from the Valencian region. The museum’s Gallery 4 will showcase Valencia before “Normative Art”, revisiting a transformative historical period from 1947 to 1960. Additionally, the program culminates with “Between Depth and Distance,” a unique site-specific initiative by artist Andrea Canepa.

This year marks a significant turning point for the museum, paving the way for a vibrant future ahead.
