Google’s Pixel 9 phones are on the brink of receiving AirDrop support, making file sharing with Apple’s iPhone range a breeze. This exciting development follows Google’s announcement last November about integrating Android’s Quick Share function with iOS AirDrop, allowing seamless file sharing between the two rival platforms when the devices are in close proximity.
The feature was initially rolled out to Google Pixel 10 phones and is now making its way to older Pixel devices, starting with the Pixel 9. Android Authority recently discovered files related to the cross-platform sharing system in the latest Android Canary build, specifically tailored for Google Pixel 9 phones. Unfortunately, the Pixel 9a model seems to be excluded from this update.
Previous Android Canary builds did not contain any files related to this feature, and there are still no signs of it for the Pixel 8 series and older models. It appears that Google is gradually introducing this convenient feature to its lineup of devices.
Pixel AirDrop Availability
While there is no confirmation of the functionality of this feature on Pixel 9 phones yet, it is speculated that it may be activated in the upcoming Android releases. The next major Android feature drop, Android 16 QPR3, is anticipated to arrive in March, potentially incorporating this feature. Alternatively, it could be introduced in Android 17, expected to launch in the middle of 2026.
Despite the seamless integration between Google and Apple for this feature, it is important to note that this initiative is driven by Google. It is believed that Apple had to comply with EU regulations mandating access to its proprietary file sharing system.
