Iran’s parliament has recently approved a plan to suspend its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and cease cooperation with the global atomic watchdog following attacks on its nuclear facilities by Israel and the US. The move, supported by a majority vote in parliament, signifies a significant escalation in tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

The approved proposal mandates the government to immediately implement the law and halt all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the NPT and safeguards agreements. While the decision falls short of a complete withdrawal from the NPT, it underscores Iran’s determination to respond to perceived threats to its sovereignty and security.

The IAEA had been conducting rigorous inspections in Iran under the 2015 nuclear accord, which imposed strict limitations on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, the agency’s ability to conduct inspections has been hampered since the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018, leading to a significant reduction in Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA.

The recent escalation in hostilities, including airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, has further strained relations between Iran and the international community. The IAEA’s director-general, Rafael Grossi, has called for diplomatic solutions to the crisis and emphasized the importance of resuming cooperation with Iran to address concerns about its nuclear activities.

Despite the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, tensions remain high, with Iranian leaders vowing to accelerate their nuclear program in response to perceived threats. The decision to suspend cooperation with the IAEA reflects Iran’s determination to safeguard its national interests and assert its sovereignty in the face of external pressure.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community must engage in meaningful dialogue to de-escalate tensions and prevent further conflict in the region. Diplomatic efforts are essential to addressing the root causes of the crisis and finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing standoff over Iran’s nuclear program.
