An Irish firefighter, Terence Crosbie, has been sentenced to up to nine years in prison for raping a woman during his visit to Boston for the St. Patrick’s Day parade last year. Despite letters of support from his wife and children, the Suffolk Superior Court Judge Joshua Wall handed down the seven to nine-year sentence, calling the rape “an act of extraordinary sexual violence”.

The 39-year-old Crosbie was convicted of the disturbing 15-minute attack at the city’s Omni Parker House on March 15, 2024. He pleaded with the judge to allow him to return to his family in Ireland at the sentencing hearing. His lawyers submitted 80 pages of letters in support of him, including one from his wife and a joint letter from his two daughters, aged 15 and 8.

In the letter, his daughters described him as the kindest, most caring, and hardworking person they know, stating that he always puts their family first and makes sure they feel loved, safe, and supported. They referred to him as their hero and asked the judge to send him home. However, the content of his wife’s letter was not disclosed.

Crosbie’s lawyer, Daniel Reilly, requested a three- to five-year sentence, highlighting Crosbie’s clean record aside from the conviction. Reilly acknowledged the seriousness of the conviction and its impact on the victim but emphasized that Crosbie is a dedicated husband and father to his two daughters.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim tearfully described how the rape had disrupted her life and shattered her confidence. The attack took place after the woman had consensual sex with a friend of Crosbie’s in a hotel room they shared. She later woke up to find Crosbie in her bed, raping her.

The victim expressed her fear and disappointment in Crosbie’s lack of remorse or apology for his actions. Crosbie maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty and denying ever touching the woman.

Despite the letters of support and pleas for leniency, Judge Wall deemed the crime as an act of extraordinary sexual violence and handed down the significant sentence. Crosbie’s actions have had a lasting impact on the victim and others involved, highlighting the gravity of the offense and the need for accountability.
