‘Ironheart’ Review: MCU Show Is Overcrowded

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its lack of spatial specificity, often relying on green-screened soundstages for its settings. However, the newest addition to the MCU, “Ironheart,” brings a refreshing focus on a specific location – the predominantly Black South Side of Chicago. The protagonist, Riri Williams, is expelled from MIT and returns to her hometown, where she becomes entangled in a world of heists and super-powered suits.

Riri, with her technical prowess and homemade suit, faces struggles that Tony Stark never had to deal with, such as lack of resources and connections. This adds a layer of realism to the character and grounds the show in personal stakes. As Riri navigates her return to Chicago, she joins a local heist crew led by Parker Robbins, a character with mysterious powers reminiscent of Robin Hood.

The show pays homage to Chicago with its casting choices and authentic filming locations. Riri’s backstory, including the loss of her stepfather and best friend in a drive-by shooting, adds emotional weight to the narrative. The introduction of a holographic AI version of her best friend further complicates Riri’s journey.

As the season progresses, “Ironheart” delves into complex themes such as artificial intelligence and the limitations of genius. However, the show struggles to balance its various plot elements, veering between heist procedural and supernatural storytelling. The introduction of familiar MCU characters and the setup for future appearances hint at a broader universe beyond Chicago.

“Ironheart” offers a unique take on the superhero genre, blending elements of science and magic against the backdrop of a vibrant city. The first three episodes are available on Disney+, with the second half of the season premiering on July 1st. Fans can expect a mix of action, drama, and moral dilemmas as Riri navigates her dual identity as a brilliant inventor and a reluctant hero.
