Duolingo, Inc. has been making waves in the education sector as a mobile learning platform that has continued to show strong performance despite some concerns around slowing user growth and rising AI-related costs. With the stock trading at $106.61 as of May 25th, DUOL’s trailing and forward P/E ratios were 12.20 and 14.22 respectively, according to Yahoo Finance.

The company reported impressive Q1 2026 revenue of $292 million with a 29% adjusted EBITDA margin, all while maintaining a debt-free balance sheet with over $1 billion in cash. Although daily active user growth saw a year-over-year increase of 21%, a slowdown from the 50% growth seen in 2024, engagement on the platform improved significantly as users spent more time learning and monetization strengthened across international markets, especially in China.

Management has been focused on reducing subscription friction and removing paywalls to drive long-term growth, aiming for 100 million daily active users by 2028. While Q2 bookings guidance of 6% growth raised some concerns among investors, the company still expects a strong 10%-12% bookings growth and 15%-18% revenue growth for the full year. The company plans to achieve this through the expansion of AI-driven features, deeper language courses, and the introduction of math and music offerings.

Although AI investments have temporarily impacted gross margins due to higher compute costs, features like Video Call and Explain My Answer are expected to drive long-term efficiencies and strengthen the platform’s competitive edge. With over $350 million in expected annual free cash flow, solid retention metrics, and a valuation that has become more attractive, Duolingo seems well-positioned as a long-term education super-app. The current dip in the stock price could offer significant upside potential if user growth rebounds and the platform expansion strategy succeeds.

Value & Momentum Portfolio’s bullish thesis on Duolingo highlights the company’s transition towards a retention-focused, AI-powered education platform. Despite a drop in the stock price since their previous coverage in 2025, the potential for growth and success in the education market remains strong for Duolingo. Investors may want to consider adding DUOL to their portfolio for long-term growth potential in the education sector.
