Confluent (CFLT) shares experienced a significant surge, closing nearly 30% higher on Monday morning following the announcement that International Business Machines (IBM) is acquiring the California-based data streaming platform for $11 billion in cash. IBM’s proposal values each CFLT share at a premium of $31, reflecting the company’s belief in Confluent’s advanced technology for unlocking real-time data value.

Despite the impressive jump in stock price, Confluent stock still remains down over 20% from its year-to-date high set in early February. IBM’s acquisition of Confluent is seen as a strategic move to leverage real-time data streaming and processing to enhance its current and future AI models and agents.

IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna highlighted the significance of this acquisition in an interview with CNBC, stating that having one control plane through Confluent’s technology will unlock a lot of potential for the company. Analysts, including Dan Ives from Wedbush Securities, view the transaction as a strong move to accelerate IBM’s artificial intelligence strategy.

While the IBM- Confluent deal is positive for the latter, it may not be the best time for new investors to initiate positions in CFLT shares. The market has already factored in the deal premium, leaving little room for further upside in the stock. Additionally, once the acquisition is finalized in the first half of 2026, Confluent will go private, making it unlikely for the stock to trade above $31 unless a competing bidder emerges.

In essence, the opportunity for significant returns in Confluent has likely closed with the deal with IBM. The consensus target price for CFLT shares was around $28, indicating that the stock was not expected to trade much higher than its current price.

Ultimately, while the IBM-driven rally in Confluent stock has generated excitement, it may not be the best time for new investors to chase the stock at its current levels.
