Salmon sperm facials may sound like a bizarre beauty trend, but for Kim Kardashian, trying out unconventional treatments is nothing new. The reality star recently shared her experience with getting a salmon sperm facial on an episode of The Kardashians, where she revealed that salmon sperm was injected into her face as part of the treatment.

While this may seem like something only celebrities can afford, salmon sperm, also known as PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotides) or salmon DNA, is actually a common ingredient in skincare products in countries like Korea. Research suggests that polynucleotides, like those found in fish sperm, can target proteins in the skin that promote wound healing, tissue regeneration, stimulate collagen production, and improve skin elasticity.

In countries like Korea and Australia, brands like Nucleofill and Pluryal Silk offer polynucleotide injectables that are used to soften fine lines and brighten the skin. However, it’s important to note that salmon sperm facials are not FDA-approved in the U.S., and there is limited evidence on their effectiveness and safety.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal advises caution when considering salmon sperm facials, citing concerns about the lack of regulation, potential for infection, and unknown side effects, especially for those allergic to fish or shellfish. While the treatment may be trending, Dr. Lal recommends sticking to proven skincare options like vitamin C serums or retinoids, or even PRP “vampire facials” that use your own blood for rejuvenation.

Ultimately, the decision to try a salmon sperm facial should be made with careful consideration of the risks involved. While Kim Kardashian may have ventured into this new beauty territory, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist before undergoing any unconventional skincare treatments.
