Isabelle D: The Crochet Artist Crafting Healing Through Fiber

Isabelle D discovered her passion for crochet at the young age of seven, learning the craft from her grandmother as a way to support her family. What started as a means of income has blossomed into a lifelong artistic journey that showcases her incredible talent and dedication to her craft.

Using a variety of fibers such as silk, cotton, and viscose, Isabelle D creates intricate pieces inspired by nature. Her work reflects the beauty of coral reefs, sea sponges, anemones, flowers, molds, and spores, all coming together in vibrant landscapes filled with color and texture.

One of her recent series, “A Officinalis,” draws inspiration from the medicinal properties of the marshmallow plant, symbolizing healing and regeneration. The soft, delicate forms in soothing shades of pink and blue are complemented by fuzzy structures in creamy white yarn, creating a serene and meditative space for healing.

In contrast, the “Bruise” series explores the concept of strength emerging from trauma, with vibrant reds, purples, and blues mimicking the colors of a damaged body. Despite the theme of injury, these pieces exude a unique beauty that celebrates resilience and inner strength.

Isabelle D’s dedication to her craft is evident in her meticulous approach to each piece. She handcrafts every work without the assistance of others, immersing herself in the slow and methodical process of crocheting to achieve the perfect balance of tension and stitches.

If you find yourself in Brussels, be sure to visit Gallery Nosco to see Isabelle D’s solo exhibition, “Hanging by a Thread,” on display until May 24. The exhibition showcases the artist’s incredible talent and the transformative power of her fiber art.
