Israel warned of ‘concrete actions’ over Gaza

In a joint statement, the leaders of the United Kingdom, Canada, and France have issued a stern warning to Israel, threatening “concrete actions” if it does not halt its military offensive in Gaza and lift aid restrictions. The renewed pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu comes as the Israeli military announced the start of a new operation, with Netanyahu vowing to take control of the entire Gaza Strip. International experts have raised concerns about a looming famine in the region.

The British government condemned Israel’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to Gaza’s civilian population, calling it a breach of International Humanitarian Law. The leaders stated that if Israel does not cease its military offensive and ease aid restrictions, further actions will be taken. Additionally, they expressed opposition to any attempts to expand settlements in the West Bank, warning of possible targeted sanctions.

In response, Netanyahu accused the Western leaders of incentivizing attacks on Israel and vowed to defend the country until total victory is achieved. He reiterated Israel’s conditions for ending the conflict, including the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attack.

Since March, Israel has blocked the entry of crucial supplies into Gaza in an effort to pressure Hamas to release the hostages. The Western leaders criticized Israel’s actions as disproportionate and expressed support for efforts led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to secure an immediate ceasefire. They also affirmed their commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution.

Hamas welcomed the joint statement as a step towards upholding international law principles. The ongoing ground and air war in Gaza has had devastating consequences, leading to mass displacement and a significant loss of life. The conflict began with a deadly Hamas-led attack in 2023, resulting in civilian casualties and hostage-taking.

Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to bring about a ceasefire and work towards a lasting solution to the conflict in the region.
