In those early days, we were scraping by. We were selling robots for bomb disposal and exploring other military applications. We were constantly on the brink of bankruptcy, with no money in the bank and struggling to make payroll. But we believed in the potential of robotics to change the world, and that belief kept us going.

When we finally launched the Roomba in 2002, it was a game-changer. The idea of a robot vacuum that could clean your floors while you were out was revolutionary. People loved it, and we sold millions of units. We were on top of the world, and it seemed like the sky was the limit for iRobot.

But success can be fleeting, and we faced our fair share of challenges over the years. Competition in the robotics market grew fierce, and new players entered the space with innovative products. We had to constantly evolve and adapt to stay ahead, but we always believed in the power of innovation to drive our success.

As I reflect on the rise and fall of iRobot, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible team that helped build the company, the loyal customers who supported us, and the lessons learned along the way. While the end may be bittersweet, I am excited for what the future holds and the opportunities that lie ahead in the world of robotics.

One of the co-founders of iRobot, Professor Rod Brooks, had a vision to embed machine intelligence in low-cost robotics and change the world. The company’s mission was simple: build cool stuff, deliver a great product, have fun, make money, and make a difference.
