Some concepts are so foundational that they should be universally accepted.

One such principle is the pursuit of Gold Standard Science—where all scientific endeavors are reproducible, transparent, devoid of conflicts of interest, and foster collaboration. As OSTP Director Michael Kratsios articulated in a recent op-ed, “Science and politics need not be in opposition. By ensuring that the science underpinning decisions adheres to the highest standards of research integrity, we can make these decisions both transparent and scientifically sound.”

However, some factions within the scientific community prioritize political allegiance over professional integrity, disregarding the fundamental tenets of Gold Standard Science for reasons that seem more political than substantive.

In the words of Science journals Editor-in-Chief Holden Thorp, expressed in a recent article: “It is entirely feasible to champion science while simultaneously holding it to account.”

“The defensiveness exhibited by researchers and institutions when confronted with issues only serves to intensify skepticism. Instead of resorting to litigation and cloaking themselves behind meticulously worded statements, the scientific community should engage in open dialogue about the challenges it faces and the solutions that may be found.”

This rationale underpins President Trump’s executive order on Restoring Gold Standard Science, reflecting his aspiration for America to reclaim the high standards historically associated with its scientific community.

The stark reality is that a chasm exists between the American public and the scientific establishment—a relationship that is in dire need of mending.

Now is the opportune moment to collaborate with the Administration to forge a path toward resolution.
