As reports of turmoil and internal discord emerge from the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth appears to be caught in a web of controversy, allegedly leaking sensitive information to anyone with the Signal app installed on their phone. The whispers are growing louder that Hegseth might soon be packing his bags.
NPR has reported that Trump is on the lookout for a new Defense Secretary:
According to a U.S. official with no authority to speak publicly, the White House has initiated the search for a new secretary of defense.
This development comes as Hegseth finds himself entrenched in controversy. NPR also confirmed that Hegseth shared sensitive details about last month’s strikes in Yemen with his wife and brother via a Signal chat on his personal phone, mere minutes after receiving an update from a senior U.S. military official.
This scenario plays right into the playbook of Trump. The administration may publicly back Hegseth until the moment Trump announces a replacement via social media, leaving everyone wondering if they missed the memo on Hegseth’s impending exit.
While a single report may not conclusively indicate Hegseth’s dismissal, Politico spoke with Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, who stated:
I’m not in the White House, and I’m not going to dictate how the White House should handle this, but I find the situation unacceptable, and I wouldn’t tolerate it if I were in charge.
…
It seems like there’s a meltdown happening,” Bacon remarked. “There’s a lot—an awful lot—of smoke coming out of the Pentagon, and I believe there must be some fire behind it.
It’s unlikely that many Republicans in Congress will muster the courage to call for Trump to fire Hegseth, as doing so might reflect poorly on Trump and elicit his wrath against them.
When we connect the dots, a clear picture begins to emerge: it’s only a matter of time before Pete Hegseth is shown the door.
