Conor McGregor is struggling to move past his defeat at UFC 329 and has shared another perspective on his return to the octagon.

After a five-year hiatus, the Irishman went up against Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329. However, the bout was cut short, lasting just over a minute, as McGregor injured his knee. The injury occurred when he attempted to kick Holloway at the fight’s outset. McGregor slipped immediately following the kick and lost his footing multiple times before the referee stopped the fight.

Despite requesting the fight be declared a no-contest, McGregor offered an unusual explanation on social media about the fight’s beginning. He alleged that the use of smoke and dry ice on the mat made it slippery, contributing to his fall. He reiterated his call for the fight to be classified as a no-contest and posted the following on Instagram:

“The white orange and green machine. mosying on back to the office, up the office! Sorry I’m late but the dry ice has the cage floor wet it’s a no contest now chop chop for the champ champ I’ll see ya’s next year 100%.”

This incident marks McGregor’s second significant injury in consecutive fights. Previously, against Dustin Poirier, he injured his leg, necessitating surgery and a lengthy recovery period.

Conor McGregor to fight again next year?

UFC President Dana White confirmed that McGregor sustained an ACL injury at UFC 329 and anticipated that the fighter would be sidelined for a year.

McGregor has also mentioned his intention to return to the ring next year to fulfill the final bout of his current contract. While some speculate that McGregor may not return, Dominick Cruz believes otherwise. On Ariel Helwani’s show, the former UFC bantamweight champion expressed confidence in McGregor’s return:

“With all the access to the things he has, he absolutely can come back… He’s got everything in the world; everybody keeps saying, right? So why do you go back in, in the octagon? There’s only one logical reason to go in there and do that, and it’s when you have everything he has, and it’s because he needs it.”

He further commented:

“I think that he definitely will be back, I really do, because of the injury and because he got that taste and that, that feeling of showing up… Everybody wants a comeback story, so no matter what anybody says, they’re gonna watch because everybody loves a comeback story… Yeah, he’ll, I think he’ll definitely do it.”
