Jack Lowden has landed the lead role in Apple TV+’s new drama series based on Philip Kerr’s “Berlin Noir” book series. The series will be directed and executive produced by Tom Shankland.
In the series, Lowden will portray detective Bernie Gunther. The story kicks off with the events of “Metropolis,” the final book in the series, but takes place in 1928, providing Bernie’s origin story. Bernie, a newly promoted member of the Berlin Murder Squad, is tasked with investigating a series of murders targeting individuals on the outskirts of society. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Berlin, Bernie finds himself navigating a city on the brink of political and social upheaval, with the looming threat of the Nazis in the background.
Lowden, known for his role in Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” as River Cartwright, has also appeared in films like “Dunkirk” (2017), “Small Axe: Mangrove” (2020), and “Benediction” (2021).
The adaptation of “Berlin Noir” is currently untitled and is being handled by Peter Straughan. The series is executive produced by Straughan, Shankland, Jane Tranter, Dan McCulloch, Ryan Rasmussen, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman. The rights to the “Berlin Noir” novels are owned by Kerr’s widow, Jane Thynne, through their company Thynker Ltd.
Lowden is represented by Conway van Gelder Grant in the U.K. and UTA in the U.S., while Shankland is represented by Hugo Young at Independent Talent Group. Straughan is represented by Casarotto Ramsay and Associates and CAA.
