Jackie Ferrara, the renowned artist known for her methodical approach to creating geometric wooden structures and architectural environments, passed away last week at the age of 95 in Basel, Switzerland. Ferrara was a meticulous planner, often sketching out every detail of her sculptures on graph paper before bringing them to life. She was fascinated by numbers, lists, and the precise lines of Morse code.

In her final days, Ferrara made the decision to end her life at Pegasos, a Swiss nonprofit that specializes in physician-assisted deaths. Despite not being terminally ill, she found the thought of losing her independence unbearable. Frail and confined to a walker, Ferrara realized that she did not want to end up bedridden and dependent on others for care.

Born in Detroit in 1929, Ferrara’s artistic journey was marked by a rare level of recognition for a woman artist of her generation. Self-taught and driven by a passion for geometric structures, she created monumental works that graced major museums and public spaces across the country. Despite her success, Ferrara often downplayed her achievements, attributing them to chance or luck.

Ferrara’s life story was marked by bold decisions and moments of recklessness. After leaving her husband and young son behind in Detroit, she embarked on a journey to New York in pursuit of a new life. Her early struggles and sacrifices eventually led her to a career as a celebrated artist, where she found solace in creating structured forms that contrasted with the chaos of her personal life.

In the final months leading up to her appointment at Pegasos, Ferrara remained resolute in her decision. She faced the prospect of her own mortality with a sense of calm and even excitement. Surrounded by her wooden sculptures, which seemed to come alive in the sunlight, Ferrara’s legacy as an artist who embraced both order and unpredictability will continue to inspire future generations.

Her legacy will endure through the timeless beauty of her geometric structures and the stories they tell of a life lived with passion and purpose.
