Jake Johnson has landed the lead role in a new private investigator comedy pilot for NBC, created by Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici. The pilot, which was picked up by NBC in January, is set to continue the legacy of Los Angeles private eyes from Philip Marlowe to the present day.
The untitled single-camera show will see Johnson playing Mickey, a smart, cynical, and heartbroken private investigator with a talent for solving cases. Previously an LAPD cop, Mickey’s life took a turn three years ago, leading him to his current profession.
The plot details for the pilot are still under wraps, but with Akiva Schaffer on board as director and executive producer, the show is in capable hands. Schaffer, known for his work on “The Naked Gun” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” brings his comedic expertise to the project.
Johnson, best known for his role as Nick Miller in the long-running sitcom “New Girl,” has a diverse resume in both television and film. From voicing characters in the “Spider-Verse” franchise to starring in comedies like “Let’s Be Cops” and “Ride the Eagle,” Johnson has proven his range as an actor. He is also set to star in the upcoming series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” on Apple TV.
Goor and Del Tredici are co-writing and executive producing the pilot, with Johnson serving as both producer and star. Universal Television is producing the show, adding to the list of promising new projects coming to NBC.
Interestingly, NBC is also working on a reboot of “The Rockford Files,” with David Boreanaz attached to play Jim Rockford. The network seems to have a keen interest in the private investigator genre, with multiple projects in development.
Overall, the private investigator comedy pilot starring Jake Johnson shows promise with a talented team behind it. With Johnson’s comedic chops and the creative vision of Goor, Del Tredici, and Schaffer, this new show is one to watch out for on NBC.
