James Van Der Beek Reflects on Tough Year After Cancer Diagnosis

In a recent Instagram video, James Van Der Beek opened up about the challenges he faced over the past year after being diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. The 48-year-old actor shared how his health battle made him question his worth and place in the world, especially as it impacted his wife, Kimberley, and their six children.

Van Der Beek, who has been married to Kimberley since 2010, described how defining himself as an actor, husband, and father was not as fulfilling as he had hoped. However, his cancer diagnosis forced him to reevaluate his identity and priorities.

“When I was younger, I used to define myself as an actor, which was never really all that fulfilling. And then I became a husband and that was much better. And then I became a father and that was the ultimate,” Van Der Beek shared in the emotional video.

The actor explained how his cancer treatment made it challenging for him to fulfill his roles as a husband, father, and provider. He struggled with feelings of helplessness and uncertainty as he grappled with his mortality.

“I could not be a provider because I wasn’t working. I couldn’t even be a steward of the land because at times I was too weak to prune all the trees during the window that you’re supposed to prune them,” Van Der Beek revealed.

Despite these challenges, Van Der Beek ultimately found solace in self-reflection and meditation. He came to the realization that he was still worthy of love and acceptance, regardless of his circumstances.

“I meditated and the answer came through. I am worthy of God’s love, simply because I exist. And if I’m worthy of God’s love, shouldn’t I be worthy of my own?” he shared.

Van Der Beek first disclosed his cancer diagnosis in November 2024, expressing optimism about his treatment and recovery. He credited his family for their unwavering support during this difficult time.

As Van Der Beek continues his battle with cancer, he remains focused on his healing journey and finding strength in the love and support of his loved ones. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of self-love and resilience in the face of adversity. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new report highlighting the importance of mental health in overall well-being. The report, titled “Mental Health Matters: The Impact of Mental Health on Global Health,” sheds light on the significant impact mental health has on individuals, communities, and societies around the world.

According to the report, mental health disorders affect one in four people globally, making it a leading cause of disability worldwide. Despite the prevalence of mental health issues, there is still a significant stigma surrounding mental illness, which often prevents individuals from seeking help and receiving the support they need.

The report emphasizes that mental health is not just the absence of mental illness, but a state of well-being in which individuals can realize their full potential, cope with the stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their communities. It stresses the importance of promoting mental health and well-being as a fundamental aspect of overall health.

The report also highlights the economic impact of mental health disorders, estimating that depression and anxiety alone cost the global economy $1 trillion each year in lost productivity. This underscores the need for governments and healthcare systems to prioritize mental health services and support, both for the well-being of individuals and for the economic prosperity of societies as a whole.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the report also addresses the impact of the crisis on mental health. The pandemic has exacerbated existing mental health issues and created new challenges, such as increased anxiety, stress, and social isolation. The report calls for increased investment in mental health services and resources to support individuals who may be struggling with the effects of the pandemic.

Overall, the WHO report serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health in global health and well-being. It calls on governments, healthcare systems, and individuals to prioritize mental health, reduce stigma, and ensure that everyone has access to the support and resources they need to thrive. By recognizing the impact of mental health and taking action to address it, we can create a healthier, more resilient world for all.
