On this day in 2020, the U.S. confirmed its first case of the 2019 novel coronavirus from China, as a Washington state resident who had recently returned from the outbreak’s epicenter was hospitalized near Seattle.

In 1793, King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution for treason.

In 1915, the first Kiwanis Club was established in Detroit, focusing on community service.

Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin passed away at the age of 53 in 1924.

In 1950, Alger Hiss, a former State Department official accused of being part of a Communist spy ring, was found guilty in New York.

British Airways and Air France began scheduled passenger service on the Concorde jet in 1976.
