Historical Events on this Day:

On this day in 2020, the U.S. declared a public health emergency due to the new coronavirus, and President Trump signed an order restricting entry for foreign nationals who had recently been in China.

In 1863, the First South Carolina Volunteers, an all-Black Union regiment of escaped slaves, was mustered into federal service during the Civil War.

In 1945, Pvt. Eddie Slovik was executed for desertion, becoming the first U.S. soldier since the Civil War to face such a fate.

Also, in 1958, the U.S. launched its first successful satellite, Explorer 1, marking the start of the Space Age.

Fast forward to 1971, astronauts Shepard, Mitchell, and Roosa embarked on a mission to the moon aboard Apollo 14.
