Ace Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah wasted no time in making an impact as he dismissed Quinton de Kock in the very first over of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 Group 1 match against South Africa. The highly anticipated match took place on Sunday, February 22, at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The crucial wicket fell on the penultimate delivery of the second over of the Proteas’ innings. Bumrah delivered a well-directed back-of-a-length delivery at a speed of 137 km/h, which de Kock tried to dispatch with a hefty swing but failed to connect, resulting in his stumps being shattered.

The left-handed batsman managed to score only six runs off seven deliveries, including a boundary, before his untimely dismissal left South Africa reeling at 10/1 after 1.5 overs.

Adding to the early breakthrough, young paceman Arshdeep Singh joined Jasprit Bumrah in the wicket column by removing South African skipper Aiden Markram for just four runs in the following over. As a result, the Proteas found themselves in a precarious position at 12/2.

At the time of writing, South Africa were struggling at 19/2 after three overs, with Ryan Rickelton (7) and Dewald Brevis (1) trying to stabilize the innings.

In terms of team composition, South Africa’s lineup featured Aiden Markram (c), Quinton de Kock (wicket-keeper), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and Lungi Ngidi. On the other hand, India fielded Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Varun Chakaravarthy.
